This material provides the helmet with a strong and long-lasting structure, ensuring that it can withstand the wear and tear of daily use and maintain its protective capabilities. ABS is known to crack under high amounts of pressure. If you have the unfortunate luck of crash testing this helmet, make sure to replace it. Often small cracks in the surface are barely visible, yet can lead to compromising the impact resistance in the next crash.

       The expanded polystyrene (EPS) inner shell acts as a shock absorber, dispersing impact forces and providing an extra layer of protection during a crash. The use of EPS in helmets is a standard practice in the industry, as it offers excellent energy absorption and helps reduce the risk of head injuries.

       While EPS foam is common in most premium helmets in the western world. It is harder to find with cheap helmets from China. Where most are filled with standard soft foam material. Typically found as packing support. Thankfully, the Biltwell helmet is made of higher quality.

Breathability and Weather Resistance     

       Although the Gringo S ECE Helmet does not feature dedicated ventilation channels, it does offer some degree of breathability thanks to the design of its interior padding. The hand-sewn brushed Lycra liner with diamond-stitched quilted open-cell foam padding allows for some air circulation, which can help keep the rider comfortable during short rides or in moderate temperatures. I personally find it quite comfortable wearing it all day on rides. 

       The helmet’s shield, treated with an anti-fog coating and offering UV protection (90%), enhances visibility and ensures a clear view of the road, regardless of the weather conditions. The shield’s design also helps protect the rider from wind, rain, and other weather elements, making the helmet suitable for various riding conditions. 

       Keep in mind that this shield is removable with two screws on either side of the helmet. This allows you to change the style of the helmet day-to-day, or just to fit your riding style. It should be noted that the shield is not a sealed fit around the frame of the helmet. Because of this, there is heightened airflow compared to more touring styled helmets. Additionally, water may be able to enter when riding in the rain as it is not a tight seal. I have ridden 5+ hours in the rain with this helmet and only have experienced two… yes two drops entering. Your mileage may vary.

It’s shiny, clean, and classic. My wife has the vintage white and finds the color quite stylish.

The visor also features a snap button which allows one to easily hold the shield in place in the closed position. It’s a nice touch that adds a great look. 

       It’s a clean and classic looking helmet throughout. It’s hard to fault the design if you like the retro look. Moreover, it looks great on both men and women. My wife loves the style of this helmet. It could even be considered a fashion piece when walking to the next Starbucks carrying the helmet.

       The Gringo S ECE Helmet boasts extensive customization options and offers a degree of personalization most helmets do not. Riders can choose from an array of color options and graphics to match their individual style or their motorcycle’s color scheme. Eight colors in total, ranging from Flat Black to Metallic Grape. Biltwell also gives you the option to easily change the shield: Fog, Bubble, High-viz, etc. are all options you can put on this helmet… or even run without a shield. Additionally, the helmet is equipped with speaker pockets featuring velcro closures in the ear recesses, enabling riders to seamlessly install their preferred communication devices, such as Sena or Cardo style speakers, for a tailored riding experience accompanied by their favorite tunes.

       This design and aesthetic appeal cater to riders who value a harmonious blend of vintage inspiration and modern functionality. The combination of various color options, graphics, and compatibility with communication devices allows riders to express their individuality while benefiting from the comfort and safety of a high-quality helmet.

Sizing and Adjustability

       The Biltwell Gringo S ECE Helmet is available in two shell sizes, covering a range of head sizes from XS to 2XL. This sizing variety ensures that riders with different head shapes and sizes can find a comfortable and secure fit. The helmet’s size chart provided by the manufacturer is decently accurate, helping riders select the appropriate size for their head measurements. However, I found the sizes to run a bit small. I am a medium in nearly every helmet, however with the Gringo S ECE, I stepped up to a Large. It made the fit much better. 

       The helmet weighs 3.54 pounds, or 1.6 kilos to my friends outside of the imperial system. It’s not light, but it’s not heavy either. I think it’s best described as, “secure”. It’s a confident weight that reminds you that you are wearing a helmet. 

       While the Gringo S ECE Helmet does not have extensive adjustability features, the removable cheek pads allow for some customization of the fit. Riders can easily swap out the cheek pads for a different size or thickness to fine-tune the helmet’s fit according to their preferences. I swapped out my wife’s cheek pads to find her a better fit. 3 minutes and 6 button snaps later, job done.

Padding and Cushioning

       One of the standout features of the Gringo S ECE Helmet is its comfortable and plush interior padding. The hand-sewn brushed Lycra liner, combined with the contrasting diamond-stitched quilted open-cell foam padding, provides a soft and cushioned feel against the wearer’s face… and it looks very classy. This comfortable padding not only enhances the overall wearing experience but also contributes to a snug and secure fit, which is crucial for safety.

       The helmet also features an internal BioFoam chin pad with hand-sewn contrast stitching, providing additional comfort and cushioning around the chin area. This attention to detail in the padding design ensures that riders can enjoy a comfortable and enjoyable riding experience, even during longer rides.

Airflow and Ventilation Features

       The Gringo S ECE Helmet does not have dedicated ventilation channels or vents typically found in modern full-face helmets. However, the helmet’s interior padding and the shield design allow for some degree of airflow, helping to maintain a comfortable temperature inside the helmet during shorter rides or moderate weather conditions.

       While the helmet’s ventilation may not be as robust as other models with more advanced venting systems, its comfortable padding and overall design can still provide a satisfactory level of comfort for riders who prioritize the helmet’s vintage aesthetic and modern safety features.

       In conclusion, it offers a comfortable and secure fit, thanks to its plush padding, removable cheek pads, and a range of sizing options. Although it lacks advanced ventilation features, the helmet’s design and padding provide a satisfactory level of comfort and airflow for riders who value the combination of retro style and modern safety features. It’s quality, even if you are giving up some features for style’s sake.

Aerodynamics

       The Biltwell Gringo S ECE Helmet, while maintaining its retro aesthetic, also focuses on providing a decent level of aerodynamic performance. The helmet’s smooth, rounded shell shape contributes to reducing air resistance and minimizing wind noise, enhancing the overall riding experience. Although the Gringo S ECE Helmet may not have the most advanced aerodynamic features found in cutting-edge racing helmets, it strikes a balance between its vintage-inspired design and efficient performance, making it suitable for various types of riding styles and conditions

       I’ve ridden with the helmet at a variety of speeds and on both my Triumph Speed Twin and Tiger 900. With or without motorcycle wind protection the helmet holds up very well. The smooth surface keeps road noise minimal for the type of helmet and there was zero buffeting.

Shield Functionality and Visibility

       The helmet’s shield, constructed from injection-molded, laser CNC cut polycarbonate, offers excellent optical clarity, ensuring that riders have an unobstructed view of the road ahead. The shield is treated with an anti-fog coating and provides UV protection, further enhancing visibility in different weather conditions. It is also designed to be scratch resistant. So far, no scratches on mine.

        One of the standout features of the Gringo S ECE Helmet’s shield is its simple hinge mechanics, which allow for easy removal and replacement. The snap and tab configuration on the rider’s left side enables quick opening and secure closing, protecting the wearer from road debris and wind irritation with minimal hassle. This functionality, combined with the shield’s clear optics and UV protection, makes the helmet’s performance reliable and enjoyable during various riding situations. Even in the rain it kept nice and clean. Fog doesn’t seem to be an issue either.

      As previously mentioned, the Gringo S ECE Helmet features built-in speaker pockets with velcro closures in the ear recesses, providing a convenient space for mounting communication devices, such as Sena or Cardo style speakers. This thoughtful design allows riders to easily integrate their preferred communication systems, enhancing the helmet’s functionality and enabling riders to stay connected with their fellow riders or enjoy music during their journey. I love listening to music while riding. Though, always at a minimal level where I can still hear the road and what is happening around me.

When I first picked up the Alpinestars Corozal Drystar Gloves, I was impressed with their substantial feel and the visible protective features. But, as I’ve learned over my 16 years of riding, the effectiveness of these features can only truly be assessed in real-world conditions.
